5 Steps Toward Getting Your Maryland Salesperson License

To start,

  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • You must of good character and reputation.

  1. Complete 60 hours of approved Pre-Licensing education.

    Successfully complete an approved 60 clock hour Pre-Licensing salesperson course.

  2. Pass the course final exam in the presence of a proctor.

    After you complete all course materials and meet the minimum time requirements, you must pass a course final exam. This exam consists of 110 questions and the minimum passing score is 70%.

  3. Pass the Maryland Real Estate Salesperson Examination.

    Within one year of completing your 60-hour Pre-Licensing course, you must take and pass both portions of the Maryland salesperson licensing exam. The National portion of this exam consists of 80 questions and a 90-minute time allowance. The State portion consists of 30 questions and a 30-minute time allowance.   4. Choose a sponsoring broker.

    As you go through the process of earning your license, you’ll need to be affiliated with a broker so you can practice when licensed. Picking the right broker is a key factor to becoming a successful Maryland real estate agent, which is why it is important to have the right fit. Here are some questions to consider when searching for a sponsoring broker:

    • What is their reputation, both locally and nationally?
    • What kind of real estate agents are they looking for?
    • Are they technologically advanced and up-to-date with the latest systems?
    • How do they support their agents with education and training?
    • What kind of commission structure do they offer?
    • Do they offer benefits?
    • Do they provide their agents with leads and marketing material?
    • Is there room to grow with the brokerage?
  5. Complete the online application.

    Once you passed your licensing exam and have a sponsoring broker, you will officially apply for your Maryland real estate salesperson license with the Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation. The online application can be accessed here.
