5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Become a Real Estate Agent
1. More Money, More Problems
Notorious B.I.G. said it best: the more money you make, the more responsibilities you inherit and thus, more problems you need to deal with. Okay, he didn’t quite say it so straightforwardly, but you get the point. Let’s be real, you don’t need the extra hassle. Sure, money can buy you a better car, a bigger house, and create opportunities for long-term stability and growth. But hey, just because the average veteran real estate agent makes $84,896 doesn’t mean that’s the life for you. Trust us, the fewer obligations the better.
2. You’ll Have to Make Your Own Work Schedule
The great part about a 9-to-5 is that you have to be there when your boss tells you to be there. Unfortunately, when you work as a real estate agent, you have to decide your own schedule. It’s you who has to find clients, make appointments, and gain listings - and that much flexibility is just exhausting. Who in their sane mind would want to do that? If you like a structured schedule where you have to be present at work Monday through Friday 9-5, stay far and away from the real estate sector.
3. The Community You Serve Will Not Appreciate Your Efforts
As a real estate agent, you’re considered a leader in the community; a hero who helps residents find their dream home. An agent’s work fuels the engine that keeps this town going. Whether it’s your actual job responsibilities or extracurricular activities like volunteering, being the hero is not all it’s cut out to be. People will take you for granted, never thanking you for the work you did. You’ll also create enemies in the form of competing agents looking to take your share of the prize. Everyone says if you can be Batman, you should be Batman, but no one ever considers the consequences. Let’s take a look at the numbers:
- Spends upward of $600 million a year on gadgets
- Invested years educating himself to hone his craft as a superhero
- Currently has at least 37 villains who want to destroy him (and that’s just from the TV show)
- Can’t hold a girlfriend to save his life (“WHERE IS SHE!”)
- Never sleeps
- Destroyed his body through years of excruciating battles against villains
Becoming a hero isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. It’s expensive, time-consuming, and again, no one appreciates your efforts. Do you really want to start retirement in some unknown cafe in Florence living a secluded life with Anne Hathaway by your side? Exactly…
4. No One Tells You What to Do
Except for some desk and commission fees required by their brokerage, real estate agents are mostly independent. They are directly responsible for the business they generate and thus their career path. Whether it’s the next marketing campaign, decorations for an open house, the hours they work, or how they convert leads into clients, it’s up to each real estate agent to decide what to do. And that, my friends, is just too much freedom for the average person.
Imagine if you were in the army, and your commanding officer said, “Go do what you feel is best.” Our military would collapse, and China would surely take over as the dominant superpower. As you can clearly tell, the freedom to control your own career is just a terrible idea. And if you become a licensed real estate agent, that freedom could leave you in ruin.
5. Your Education History Can’t Stay Stagnant
Last but not least, working as a real estate agent requires you to complete Post-Licensing, First Renewal, and Continuing Education every 1-4 years (depending on your state). First off, everyone hates learning. It’s boring and taxing. You have a full-time gig anyway; adding to your industry knowledge is probably the last thing you want to do.
