How to Get Multi-State Licensed in the Greater D.C. Metro Area

by The CE Shop Team

We Simplify the Process of Getting Multi-State Licensed in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia Area With This Quick How-To

Navigating the “multi-state licensing” landscape can be an extremely confusing process. We at The CE Shop want to make it a seamless transition so you can get on your way to being a multi-state licensed real estate agent. Alright, let’s get down to brass tax.

The Multi-State Licensing Process

1. You need to get licensed in one of the two states or the District. This will require completing all courses and sitting for the National and State exams. For more information, please click on the appropriate link or watch the video below: D.C.Maryland, and Virginia.

2. Once you become a licensed agent, you will need to file for reciprocity. To do this, we strongly urge calling the reciprocal state’s real estate commission. Here is each state’s provider website information

Maryland: http://www.dllr.state.md.us/license/mrec/
Virginia: http://www.dpor.virginia.gov/Boards/Real-Estate/
D.C.: https://www.dcopla.com/realestate/

Here are the pathways for getting multi-state licensed:

If you are licensed in Maryland and want to become licensed in D.C.:

You’ll need to take a 3-hr. Fair Housing course, which we offer here. Completing this course waives the national portion of the exam, but you’ll still be required to sit for the state exam.

IMPORTANT: This course will not prepare you fully for the D.C. licensing exam. We strongly suggest looking into an exam prep course to become fully versed in the subjects covered. To get more prepared, check out the most innovative and engaging study program on the market: Exam Prep Edge.

If you are licensed in Maryland and want to become licensed in Virginia:

You’ll need a 1-hr. Virginia Agency Law course, a 1-hr Virginia Contract Law, and a 2-hr. Virginia Fair Housing course, which you can check out here. Due to the constantly changing Virginia real estate regulations, we strongly urge you to check in with the state commission to confirm these course requirements are up to date.

IMPORTANT: This course will not prepare you fully for the Virginia licensing exam. We strongly suggest looking into an exam prep course to become fully versed in the subjects covered. To get more prepared, check out the most innovative and engaging study program on the market: Exam Prep Edge.

If you are licensed in Virginia and want to become licensed in Maryland:

You’ll have to take the entire 60-hr course and sit for both the state and national portion.

If you are licensed in Virginia and want to become licensed in D.C.:

You must contact the state commission as each agent’s situation is different due to agent experience and current credits.

Benefits of Multi-State Licensing

The benefits of becoming a multi-state licensed real estate agent are limitless. Here are a few of the reasons why getting your license in multiple states will help you succeed:

  • The ability to operate in all three areas, which is important due to the proximity of each area
  • Growing home price index due to different developments like the recent construction of the Amazon HQ2 in Crystal City, Arlington, VA.
  • The ability to keep up with competition as many agents are licensed in both states and the District
  • Flexibility to work where you want while not being restricted to just one small area

The best thing about becoming multi-state licensed with The CE Shop is that we make keeping up with your license(s) simple with our customized multi-state CE packages. To learn more or if you have any questions, we’re here 7 days a week via phone, text, and email.
