Techniques and Tools to Help You Hit the Ground Running in 2018

The beginning of the year is the perfect time to evaluate what makes you a successful real estate agent and what areas of your business could use a revamp. A fresh start means hitting the reset button and trying new techniques that will keep your business thriving for years to come. These five tips will help you start the year off right.

Eliminate Distractions

As a realtor, your daily schedule is crammed with a variety of tasks – coordinating appointments, emails, showings, creating listings, and more! It’s easy to get sidetracked from a task when a client calls and demands your immediate attention.

You may have to decide what needs to be prioritized for each day and focus on that one item until it is completed. If the phone rings, you can let it ring. This might sound like a struggle but in order to be efficient, you will have to continually establish priorities.

Your workspace is also a major contributor to the success of your day. Do you work better in complete silence? Are you a multitasking master? Whatever your answer may be, ensure that your workspace matches your needs. To prevent a backlog of tasks, it is essential to eliminate the distractions in your work area.

Organize Your Life

Starting a new year with everything in its proper place will help ease frustrations further down the road. Whether it’s physical or digital, organization is key.

Use resources like Google Drive to keep all of your files organized in one place. If you are already using an online source, set aside some time to assess your documents and clean out your files. Online storage can easily become just as cluttered and nonsensical as our physical storage areas. You may find that you have been keeping unnecessary documents “just in case” and a massive wipe will create digital space for the year ahead.

Buy an organizer, planner, calendar, or simply use the resources on your smartphone to start making and setting plans. If you’re the type of person who is constantly surrounded by sticky notes or setting reminders for yourself, these resources will be your one-stop solution to an uncluttered life.

Develop a Strategy

What worked for you last year? What didn’t? Making the same mistakes year after year is often a symptom of complacency and it may just take one hour of brainstorming to break the bad habits of your past.

Developing a business plan for the year ahead can help you set realistic goals that you can surpass. Fit Small Business features this how-to guide for creating a thorough business plan.

Establish a Work-Life Balance

The real estate industry is not limited to a firm 9-to-5 workday and that inevitably creates a gray line between your work life and your personal life. However, without the proper amount of downtime, burnout may be unavoidable.

If you’ve found that your personal life is slipping away from you, take a moment and reassess your priorities. You might have an especially busy schedule today but that just means that you should carve out some free time for yourself tomorrow. If need be, schedule your free time in advance so that it is already blocked off your calendar.

In the new year, set boundaries for yourself to ensure that you have the time you need to stay energized. Strategic methods of balancing your busy schedule can be found here.

Embrace the Unknown

Nothing always goes according to plan. We all know this. But it’s not an easy concept to accept when the going gets tough. The industry can change in an instant. A client can be fickle and decide to go a different way at any moment. Part of the job is being flexible and rolling with the punches. Head into the new year knowing that you may encounter one obstacle on Monday and twenty on Tuesday.

No matter what happens, you have planned for the unexpected and will be able to overcome any obstacles in your way.
