Commissions are generally 6% of a home’s purchase price. The listing agent splits that percentage in half with the buyer’s agent. With your 50%, you may pay a percentage to the broker you work for (e.g., a 60/40 split). For example, a $300,000 home sale will gross $18,000 in total commission, which equals $9,000 for each agent. After the agent pays the broker they work for, they walk away with $5,400 (based on the example of a 60/40 split with the broker). Obviously the opportunity to make $5,400 on the sale of one home is very appealing and the higher a home’s purchase price, the greater the commission. The more sales you complete, the more money you can make.
