How to Get Your Salesperson Real Estate License in California

GET YOUR CALIFORNIA LICENSE IN 5 STEPS

Don't worry, we've made it easy for you. Follow these guidelines to get started in the licensing process.

1

Successfully complete 135 hours (3 courses) of approved Pre-Licensing education.

This includes three courses:

  1. CA 45-Hour Real Estate Principles
  2. CA 45-Hour Real Estate Practice
  3. CA 45-Hour Real Estate Finance

2

Complete the final exam for each course with a proctor.

For each course, you complete all the course materials, meet the minimum time requirement, and pass the practice exam. Then there is a 100-question final exam. The passing score is 70%.

You must take each final in the presence of a proctor. You’ll need to schedule an appointment with a proctor in advance. Find out more about our online proctoring here and the tech requirements you'll need here.

3

Choose a broker to support you through the process.

How do you choose the right broker? Brokers are not one-size-fits-all, which is why it’s important to do your research before choosing the brokerage that is right for you. Remember that you represent the broker that you choose, but they also represent you. You can start by asking these questions and decide if it aligns with what is most important to you.

  • What is their reputation - locally and nationally?
  • What kind of agents are they looking for?
  • Are they up-to-date technologically?
  • How do they support their agents with the education and training they provide?
  • What kind of commission and benefits do they offer?
  • Do they provide agents with leads and marketing materials?

4

Submit your exam and license application through the California Bureau of Real Estate’s website.

CalBRE schedules your licensing exam and notifies you, or you can select your own date. Details are provided on the website here.

5

Once the application is approved and you pass the licensing exam, a license will be issued to you.

Look for it on CalBRE’s eLicensing Online website here.
