These Women Are Paving the Way in Nevada Commercial Real Estate
Despite widespread gender inequality across the commercial real estate (CRE) industry, one mother-daughter duo is building a booming business in the Las Vegas area. From client services to negotiations, these women are making waves in the field, a rare win for female CRE professionals everywhere.
History of Women in Commercial Real Estate
While women now make up the majority of residential real estate agents nationwide, commercial real estate remains largely male-dominated. As of September 2020, women comprised only 36.7% of the entire CRE industry. Furthermore, this figure has not exceeded 37.0% within the last 15 years. The disparity is even more apparent in C-suites, where women hold only 9.0% of positions. At the highest levels of leadership, there is also a fixed salary gap of 10.2%, and a commission and bonus gap of 55.9% between genders. With a tumultuous history of exclusion, it’s safe to say that the commercial real estate industry has much work to do in the pursuit of equality.
How Women Are Fighting Back
Today, pioneering female agents like Soozi Jones Walker and Bobbi Miracle are shining examples of progress. Walker is a 42-year veteran of the industry and has specialized in commercial real estate since 1986. Miracle, Walker’s daughter, followed in her mother’s footsteps, establishing a real estate career of her own in 2002. The mother-daughter duo founded Las Vegas brokerage Commercial Executives Real Estate Services in 2004. Both women have collected a number of impressive accolades since, including Top Business Leader Under 40 and Commercial Alliance Las Vegas 2011 Power Broker of the Year for Miracle, and American Diabetes Association Woman of Valor, Woman of Achievement in Land and Real Estate Development, and a REALTORⓇ Hall of Fame induction for Walker.
Today, Miracle and Walker work primarily in selling and leasing office, industrial, retail, and investment properties. Recent project highlights include a $1,837,000 lease renewal, the $3,510,000 purchase of a multi-family project, and the $1,850,000 sale of a local retail center, all within the last year.
How do they do it? For one thing, Miracle and Walker are dedicated to living their brokerage’s mission of “performance, not promises.” Commercial Executive Real Estate Services was founded on world-class customer service, and the pair leverage their unique level of care to stand out from the competition and best serve their fellow Nevadans. “My clients like knowing that we are the people working on their transactions, and I am the person making the decisions in my company,” said Walker. “Bobbi and I touch a transaction from beginning to end and therefore have a full understanding of the property and the client.”
The mother-daughter team also boasts a unique level of compatibility. “As a boutique firm, if you hire us, you get us,” said Miracle. “As partners, we do many things the same way, but we also have different opinions, views, and personalities that help us see multiple perspectives in every transaction. Our skills complement one another's, and the collaboration makes our toolbox larger.”
Perhaps most importantly, Miracle and Walker understand the importance of breaking barriers. “I was breaking the glass ceiling on everything that I did,” said Walker. “I was one of the first women in Nevada to get a [Certified Commercial Investment Member designation], I was the third woman in Nevada to get a [Society of Industrial and Office REALTORSⓇ designation]. I had to actually be a part of the boys, and I had to break into the boys.”
From shattering glass ceilings to prioritizing customer care, we can all take inspiration from Bobbi Miracle and Soozi Jones Walker. Whether you’re just breaking into the commercial real estate market or are breaking barriers elsewhere, consider some sage advice from these trailblazers: “Don’t do what everybody else does,” said Walker. “Swim the opposite direction.”
