Get in the Holiday Spirit Courtesy of the Greeley Grizwalds
The Medhurst Family, also known as Colorado’s own Greeley Grizwalds, bring Christmas spirit to the northern Colorado metro in a truly colorful way. Every December, thousands of locals and tourists alike flock to the family’s home for a bright and cheery light show like something out of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. This year, safely get in the holiday spirit with their stunning holiday display.
Who Are the Greeley Grizwalds?
Greeley local Mike Medhurst is the man behind the lights. Christmas is his passion and, from mechanical reindeer to iridescent candy canes, Medhurst uses hundreds of thousands of bulbs (220,431 this year, to be exact) to put on the best light display in Greeley. We’re willing to wager that Medhurst’s display is the best in Colorado. After all, he’s been going all out when it comes to holiday home decor for nearly 20 years now and was even featured on ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight. Each year, passersby enjoy the family’s festive dancing decor, synchronized to music, followed by a more traditional stationary light display from the warmth of their cars.
Medhurst is hard at work preparing all year round, but starts physically setting up the display each September. It takes approximately two months and 400 man-hours to complete with the family putting in 10-12 hour days in their free time. When it’s time for the lights to come down, the Medhursts have so many decorations that they’ve had to start storing them in a barn a few miles down the road. After all, there’s no way all those bright and cheery pieces would fit in a standard two-car garage.
Two of the biggest questions Medhurst fields each year center on his neighbors and electricity costs. Luckily, his neighbors are truly tolerant. Homeowners nearby see just how much joy it brings to the community and are willing to put up with the occasional car parked in front of their driveway. The electricity bill, however, is a secret. The Medhursts view their display as a gift and, per traditional gift-giving etiquette, don’t discuss that cost.
