The CE Shop Helps Feed Tens of Thousands of Denver Families

by The CE Shop Team

The CE Shop Foundation Has Collected $181,297 in Five Months

About 40% of students across Colorado are eligible for free or reduced lunch, the Colorado Department of Education says. But what do those low-income families do when the weekend rolls around?

The CE Shop helps tackle that problem in the Denver area by supporting Food For Thought Denver, which provides backpacks filled with food for the weekend to children at 72 schools in the Denver area.

Just $4 is enough to feed a family of four for the weekend.

In six years, The CE Shop Foundation increased its impact tenfold, going from feeding 4,370 families of four in 2014 to feeding 43,923 families of four in 2020.

And now, in just the first five months of 2021, the foundation has collected $181,297 in donations — enough to feed about 45,324 families.

About the Cause

During the 2020-21 school year, 354,991 preschool through 12th-grade students across Colorado qualified for free or reduced lunch, the state says. The total number of students counted across the state was 883,199.

The CE Shop partners with Food For Thought Denver to help sustain Denver-area families who depend on free or reduced lunch during the school week to feed their children, ensuring that they don’t go hungry over the weekend. The CE Shop Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Food For Thought Denver supplies children in need with food PowerSacks, each of which contains 10 to 15 items — enough to supply a family of four with two meals.

Children receive the food bags on Friday afternoons so they can bring them home to their families.

Food For Thought Denver, a nonprofit run entirely by volunteers, serves schools where 90% or more of the student population is eligible for free and reduced lunch programs. The schools are known as “Title One,” which means an annual income for a family of four is less than $29,000 per year.

Donations to The CE Shop Foundation go toward feeding hungry children in the Denver region.

The CE Shop Foundation’s Progress

The staff of The CE Shop is incredibly committed to fulfilling one of the company’s core values, “We give back,” by supporting children and families in the Denver metro area, where the company is headquartered.

The majority of The CE Shop Foundation’s donations come from either The CE Shop’s employees, who can choose to give through a payroll deduction, or its students, who can donate during checkout. Many employees also volunteer with Food For Thought Denver, helping to pack the food bags.

In the years since The CE Shop Foundation was created in 2014, the amount of money it has collected to feed families in need has increased every year. Less than halfway into 2021, the nonprofit has already surpassed 2020’s total. In 2020, the average monthly donation through The CE Shop’s checkout was $8,700; the average monthly donation for 2021 is $36,500, a 420% increase.

The CE Shop chose to support this cause because, as a leading provider of online education, the team believed that school-aged children should be able to focus on learning rather than worrying about where their next meal will come from.

The Number of Families of Four Fed Per Year:

  • 2014: 4,370
  • 2015: 6,394
  • 2016: 10,268
  • 2017: 10,540
  • 2018: 16,555
  • 2019: 24,015
  • 2020: 43,923

“The CE Shop is proud to be making a difference in the lives of children and families in our community,” said Dan Harris, President of the Real Estate Division at The CE Shop. “Giving back is an essential part of our company culture. We committed to battling childhood hunger because we believe that when children are well-fed, they’re set up for success.”
