Pennsylvania Real Estate Professionals Urge Governor to Reclassify Real Estate As Essential Business

by The CE Shop Team

Real estate agents throughout the state are urging Gov. Wolf to reopen their operations by May 1 and reclassify them as an essential business.

Real estate in Pennsylvania seems to be one of the few housing markets in the nation that is struggling through the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to closures and stay at home orders. Real estate has not been deemed an essential service, which is putting a strain on agencies that cannot serve their communities.

Without being able to show homes, many buyers and sellers throughout the state are left in limbo as to what to do. Agents are worried about their clients and how they can help.

“It’s one of the biggest purchases of their life, and being able to not see it in person is a struggle,” said Selena Darraugh, a REALTOR® in Berks County. Darraugh continued to talk about one of her clients having a sales agreement for her home, and having to move out by June. She is worried about her client not having a place to live after moving out.

Darraugh’s colleague, Jill Saunders, was dealing with the same troubles, which motivated her to launch a petition, asking the governor to re-classify real estate as an “essential business”. She wants real estate agents to be allowed to show homes while taking extra precautions, like wiping down all surfaces and wearing personal protective gear. Within two days of the petition going live, 1,800 people signed, which was then sent to the governor.

Dominique Lockett, a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, said that the governor’s order to close non-life-sustaining businesses was made “with the health and safety of Pennsylvanians as first priority.” In her interview with KYW Newsradio, she provided a copy of the Life Sustaining Business FAQ from the Department of Community and Economic Development, which can be found here.
