Packers' Annual Thanksgiving Dinner in the Coronavirus Era

Green Bay Residents Can Reserve a Thanksgiving Meal, Courtesy of the Packers

Nothing says Green Bay like the Packers (see this 4 bed, 3 bath with a basement that bleeds gold and green, complete with home theater-style seating), and nothing says Thanksgiving like caring for your community. Each year, the Packers host anyone who can’t afford or would otherwise be alone at Thanksgiving dinner in the Lambeau Field atrium. While the dinner is still scheduled this year, things will look a little different in the age of COVID.

How to Partake in the Packers’ Annual Thanksgiving Dinner in 2020

For many of us, Thanksgiving is an opportunity to gather with friends and family, share a hearty meal, and express our gratitude for another year passed. Unfortunately, not everyone has a warm home or a network with whom to share the holiday. So, where do they spend Thanksgiving? Over the past four decades, Green Bay residents have been welcomed into the Lambeau Field atrium and provided with a warm meal and good company.

Lambeau Field’s annual Thanksgiving dinner is hosted by Christian Outreach in partnership with Green Bay Packers Give Back, the team’s philanthropic community outreach initiative. Whether you can’t afford a meal or would otherwise spend the holiday alone, the Lambeau Field Thanksgiving dinner provides both nourishment and community. In 2020, the 37th year of the event, participants will see a few key changes due to the pandemic.

Reserve Your Meal

Instead of stopping by Lambeau for an in-person event, attendees will need to reserve a meal ahead of time. Local agencies have been working with Packers Give Back to register their communities and, on November 1, a reservation phone line opened to the public. Anyone in need of a warm Thanksgiving dinner this year can reserve a meal at (920) 490-7030 or by visiting the Christian Outreach website.

Collect Your Meal

Unfortunately, there will be no sit-down dinner in the atrium this year. The Packers are doing their part to fight the spread of COVID, including donating $250,000 for PPE in local hospitals, and, in the case of the annual Thanksgiving dinner, implementing some socially-distanced delivery measures.

All meals will be delivered directly to your doorstep by a volunteer delivery driver. Your driver will make a contactless drop at your address and standby until you’ve come to the door and collected your meal. Whether you live in a single family home, like this spirited 3 bed, 2 bath across the street from Lambeau, or in a local apartment complex, plan to pick up your meal at the main entrance, as delivery drivers will not be entering buildings.

Enjoy Your Meal

In these uncertain times, the need for some good old comfort food has gone up. Volunteers are slated to deliver more than 2,200 helpings of turkey, stuffing, and more based on past events and current needs. Whether you attend the event every year or are facing new circumstances, rest easy knowing you have a hot meal coming your way.

Plus, leftovers and any reservations that go unfulfilled will be donated to Paul’s Pantry, so even more folks can enjoy Thanksgiving dinner. While we can’t dine together in person, a network of Green Bay residents across the city will be digging in right alongside you.

Thank a Volunteer

To make the event as safe as possible, the number of volunteers has also been adjusted in 2020. The organization is only bringing on past participants, so unfortunately this isn’t the year to volunteer for the first time. In the spirit of holiday miracles, a small but efficient force of 150 seasoned volunteers, all outfitted in the proper PPE, will cook, package, and deliver thousands of meals.

In fact, one of the only aspects that hasn’t been affected by COVID is the volunteers’ dedication. Many have worked the event for decades and are sure to miss seeing familiar faces. They plan to make it up with a delicious and seamless delivery.

If you or someone you know would like to reserve a meal, visit the Christian Outreach website or call (920) 490-7030. To make a monetary donation and sponsor a meal, you can mail a check to PO Box 28221, Green Bay, WI 54234-0221 or visit the Christian Outreach donation page.
