Oklahoma City Is Perfect for Pooches and the Clients Who Love Them
Humans and their pets go back roughly 16,000 years or more, so it goes without saying that dog-obsessed and cat-crazed clients aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, quite the opposite. According to a recent study, pet ownership is on the rise in America with approximately 71 million households owning pets — meaning that ~60% of American households have an animal companion. Furthermore, the Sooner State is ranked eighth in terms of pet ownership; roughly 65% of Oklahoman households are fighting the never-ending battle against pet hair. And for good reason, too: Oklahoma City is one of the best places in the country to own a pet.
What Makes Oklahoma City Such a Treat for Pet Owners?
Despite what you might see about tigers on your favorite streaming service, Oklahomans — like the majority of pet owners nationwide — tend to own dogs more than any other type of pet. That means having a spacious backyard is a major treat for pet owners.
As it turns out, Oklahoma City is so spread out that one could theoretically fit the cities of Philadelphia, Boston, Manhattan, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. within Oklahoma City limits, according to RentCafe.com. That means homebuyers can easily find properties with enough room for Fido to host a mini-Olympics every time it's time to go out.
Another major challenge pet owners face is finding pet-friendly rental units. Depending on the landlord, some places limit the size, type, and number of pets a person can own. When people do find a property that fits their needs, there are often added costs incurred to host their beloved furry companion. For this reason, many pet owners consider buying over renting.
Lastly, we’d be remiss not to mention that Oklahoma City is home to several off-leash dog parks and over 121 dog-friendly places where owners can bring their pooches for a bite, a pint, and to potentially meet some new friends.
Real Estate and Pets
Think real estate has gone to the dogs? You’d be right. According to a recent Realtor.com survey, almost 95% of pet-owning homebuyers reported that they thought about their pets’ needs when choosing which home to buy.
The survey also found that 38% of respondents cited a “big yard” as a property’s most important feature, followed by “outdoor spaces” at 29%, “garages” at 24%, “dog-friendly areas” at 22%, and last but not least — “interior square footage” at 20%. Not surprisingly, these are all attributes easily found in Oklahoma City.
“We believe that a home is so much more than a roof and four walls. It is where family and friends come together and memories are made,” Nate Johnson, Chief Marketing Officer for Realtor.com, said. “The results of this survey reinforce that our pets are our family and an important part of what makes a house a home.”
Considering the impressive number of Oklahomans who have pets, it could be helpful to do a quick search for dog-friendly parks and restaurants near your properties using the pet-specific search engine BringFido.com to boost your pet-friendliness.
If you’re passionate about animals, you’re not alone. According to the National Association of REALTORS® study ”Animal House: Pets in the Home Buying and Selling Process”, 81% of the agents surveyed said they consider themselves to be animal lovers. Furthermore, 14% said that they actively volunteer with animal focused organizations and that 24% would in the future. Volunteering could be a great way to help differentiate your brand — not to mention help make a difference for some animals and their owners.
