Are You Ready for the NFL Season to Start?
With the beginning of the NFL season quickly approaching, what better way to start the season off than to highlight Ohio’s claim to Pro Football Fame? Located in Canton, OH the Pro Football Hall of Fame was opened in 1963 and spotlights the most exceptional figures in the sport of professional football, including players, coaches, franchise owners, and front-office personnel, all of them having made their contributions to the game.
Renovations to the HOF Over Time
Today, the Hall of Fame has grown in both size and popularity as it’s recognized as an international shrine to the NFL. Over the years the museum has undergone serious renovations and upgrades from the original 19,000 square foot building that opened in 1963. The building was expanded in 1971, 1978, and 1995, and completed major exhibit gallery renovations in 2003, 2008, and 2009.
The Hall of Fame recently has undergone the largest expansion and renovation in its history. The "Future 50" Expansion & Renovation Project has expanded the museum to 118,000 square feet. The two-year, $27 million project was completed in the summer of 2013 after a major renovation to 38,000 square feet of museum space was finished.
Why Canton, Ohio?
When fans look at the NFL today, professional teams' dominance spans the country, while Ohio’s professional football teams don’t receive the recognition they deserve. This leaves many many people to ask why the Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in Canton, OH, of all places.
When the NFL was beginning, it was young and scrappy, with players holding regular 9-5s and paying for their uniforms, food, hotels, and travel. Teams primarily sprang up throughout the east coast and midwest along major railroad systems connecting the country.
It’s located in Canton for three primary reasons:
- The American Professional Football Association, later renamed the National Football League, was founded in Canton on September 17, 1920.
- The Canton Bulldogs were an early-day pro football power, even before the days of the NFL. They were also the first two-time champion of the NFL in 1922 and 1923.
- Canton citizens early in the 1960s launched a determined and well-organized campaign to earn the site designation for their city.
