Justin Thomas’ Golf Talent Runs in the Family

Golfer Justin Thomas’ Fame Is Widely Known, but Not His Roots

Justin Thomas is one of the most exciting and popular golfers on the PGA TOUR, accomplishing more in his short lifetime than many who walk the links with him. Thomas has won 13 times during his PGA Tour career, most recently at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis, which constituted his second WGC win.

At just 27 years old, he can lay claim to a Major PGA victory: a FedEx Cup Championship and a PGA TOUR Player of the Year Award. Thomas’ start in the PGA turned plenty of heads and he quickly made a name for himself. But where did he get his talent? What’s his home club?

Like Father, Like Son

Thomas was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, spending much of his time on the links honing his craft. He comes from a long bloodline of golfers, following in his father and grandfather’s footsteps. Thomas' father, Mike Thomas, has been the head professional at the Harmony Landing Country Club in Goshen, Kentucky, since 1990. Similarly, Thomas’ grandfather was a 60-year veteran of the PGA Tour who played in the 1962 U.S. Open.

Even today, Mike is very involved with his son’s golfing career, whether it be as a supporter, a coach, or even a caddie. If you see Justin on a golf course, his father is likely nearby, cheering on his favorite golfer and student.

“My dad was brutal on himself, and Justin was hard on himself, too… I’m not that kind of teacher,” Mike says, referring to how he’s worked with his son over the years. Mike Thomas teaches by talking and listening: Where do you want to hit this? What did that swing feel like? Is the clubface open at impact? Golf is a game of tweaks, as the elder Thomas will tell you.

Harmony Landing Country Club’s Wall of Fame

The pro shop at Harmony Landing Country Club in Goshen, Kentucky, doubles as a makeshift museum for the latest in a line of men who’ve made this game their vocation. The shop proudly displays some of Thomas’ best achievements, reminding the world that their hometown star got his game from the greens nearby.

The front counter’s display case used to house golf balls and gloves. Now it’s filled with items Thomas has accumulated, like the Haskins Award he earned as college golf’s top player in 2012 or a caddie bib from the 2009 Wyndham Championship, where he made his first PGA TOUR.

Harmony Landing Country Club, is a private club that began in 1953, and is located northeast of Louisville in picturesque Goshen, Kentucky. You will find it nestled in the heart of the most beautiful landscape that the Bluegrass State has to offer. The Clubhouse was built in the early 1800's and was constructed using bricks made on the farm at that time. The Club's challenging 18-hole golf course was initially designed by George Davis and dates back to 1929.

The Thomas family’s dedication to golf and their home club is one to be admired and used as inspiration. You should feel this same passion in your real estate practice by showing your dedication to your community and giving your best game everyday.
