Visit South Carolina to Uncover a Golfer’s Paradise
When it comes to golfing in the fall, South Carolina is a hole-in-one. Perfect weather, breathtaking landscapes, and challenging courses all make the Palmetto State the perfect place to play. After all, South Carolina is home to Dustin Johnson, currently ranked the best golfer in the world, as well as 360+ of the country’s best courses. That means there’s a lot of desirable real estate near or on the golf course for the taking, and lots of great places to hone your game. Only one question remains: Where to play?
Golfing in South Carolina
Golfing in South Carolina is unlike anywhere else in the world. People travel from all over the country to play year-round and keep their game sharp. Whether it be public courses that offer challenging holes lined with Carolina pines, or clubs that afford stunning ocean views complete with dunes and marshlands, golfers of all levels are almost guaranteed to have a unique and pleasant experience hitting the links in South Carolina. With that said, here are some of the most highly regarded courses:
Established in 1947, The Dunes Golf & Beach Club is among the early works of legendary golf course architect Robert Trent Jones. Today, it’s often regarded as one of the top 100 golf courses in the country, and GolfAdvisor.com calls the 13th hole one of the single best holes in the United States. Here, you can play in the morning and relax on the beach that afternoon.
For those looking to live near this legendary club, homes lining the course, which rarely come up for sale, range from the mid $500s up to $1.2 million. Condos close by, however, can be had for about $130k.
Any place where you get to play along the ocean is worth a mention, but the Harbour Town Golf Links is about as good as it gets. Designed by the renowned Pete Dye, with the input of all-time-great golfer Jack Nicklaus, The Harbour Town Golf Links is the only place in South Carolina where a PGA event is held annually and offers those who have the privilege of playing the course one of the most challenging and scenic golf outings of their lives.
Properties along this course don’t hit the market too often, but when they do, they’ll often fetch multimillion dollar figures. A condo nearby, on the other hand, starts around the high $200s.
The Caledonia Golf & Fish Club has garnered considerable acclaim from various golf publications including Golf Digest, which puts it among “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses" and The Golf Channel, which places it on "Matt Ginella’s Top 50 Public Courses". Formerly a rice plantation, the Caledonia Golf & Fish Club is a relatively modern course that was designed with aesthetics at the forefront, making it one of the prettiest places to play in the country.
No housing is permitted along the course, but this beautiful 4 bed, 4 bath property listed at $515,000 is a mere 1.5 miles away from the clubhouse.
When people think of oceanside courses, they’ll often think of somewhere like Pebble Beach, when in reality, they should be thinking about The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island. That’s because, according to architect Pete Dye, no other course in the northern hemisphere possesses as many seaside holes. The Ocean Course, which hugs nearly 3 miles of picture-perfect Carolina coastline, has hosted the likes of many of the greatest players in golf and is scheduled to host the 103rd annual PGA Championship in 2021. Only in South Carolina!
Considering its oceanfront location, real estate by the course is pricey to say the least. Again, homes don’t come up for sale too often, but when they do, they’re like this 4 bed, 5 bath behemoth going for $3.5 million.
