History of DREW
DREW started as a national CREW organization in 2007 led by three women, Kelly Van Horn, Linda Schulz, and Julie Panaro. The organization worked to promote women in commercial real estate throughout the country. However, it wasn’t long until Van Horn, Schulz, and Panaro realized that they wanted to create their own organization that was specific to Delaware, so they decided to branch off and created the Delaware Real Estate Women organization.
These three women had a specific vision: They wanted to create the exact environment in which others succeed. The goal was to help women create a network of referrals, resources, and opportunities so they could grow together, offering support for those who are competing in a male-dominated industry.
They set out to create an organization that would empower women already in the industry, encourage other women to enter the industry, and provide plenty of networking opportunities along the way. It’s safe to say Van Horn, Schulz, and Panaro succeeded in their goal; their organization is now led by a team of 10 women, headed by President Joy Barrist.
Why DREW Is Important to Commercial Real Estate
While women currently dominate the residential real estate industry, that is not the case in commercial real estate. Currently, women in commercial real estate hold these positions within the industry:
- 54% of mid-level associate and senior positions
- 27% of SVP, managing directors, and partner-level positions
- 9% of C-suite positions
Why is it important for companies to be diverse on all levels? Companies in the top 25% for gender diversity are 15% more likely to have financial returns above their industry medians. Innovation is also six times higher at companies with the most equal workplace cultures. It’s clear that including women at every level of a company is a no-brainer if you want to build a company that will grow and outperform competitors.
