Crabs for Christmas: Catch Baltimore's Seasonal Celebrations

by The CE Shop Team

Celebrate Christmas in True Baltimore Style This Season

Baltimore is home to Maryland’s best events, often featuring its quirky traditions and unique sense of humor. If you’re looking for more than just “Crabs for Christmas,” Charm City has you covered.

Throughout downtown, there is a multitude of events and activities to experience and get your Christmas fix, Maryland-style. Sure, there are beloved traditions, such as enjoying fresh seafood and sauerkraut, but most could guess that. What makes Baltimore’s celebration special is the markets and events held downtown annually, including such delights as the infamous Krampuslauf, which honors an anthropomorphic anti-Santa figure from German folklore who steals naughty children and keeps them in a sack. Read on to discover Baltimore’s other one-of-a-kind Christmas offerings and invigorate your Yuletide by the bay

Hampden’s Miracle on 34th Street

Located on the 700 block of W 34th Street in the Hampden neighborhood is the famous Miracle on 34th Street. A tradition that started with just one home on the block has blossomed into a pretty lit block party. Now in its 74th year, the annual event is a nod to the Oscar-award winning 1947 Christmas classic, starring Edmund Gwenn. Starting November 30th and running through New Year’s Eve, the street will be proudly decorated and lit by residents with their own twist. Christmas trees can be seen adorning hubcaps, crab pot Christmas trees are not uncommon, and the lights are so bright you might need some shades.

Simple traditions like this are what makes Charm City communities so great. This annual event has turned into a glowing block of twinkling townhomes, drawing thousands of visitors to stroll down 34th street every year to spread Christmas cheer.

Baltimore’s Christmas Village

An event that’s even bigger than the 34th block party is Baltimore’s Christmas Village, an authentic German Christmas market with all the bells and whistles. Located in the Inner Harbor, which offers ice skating at the Inner Harbor Ice Rink near the waterfront, the annual Christmas market brings in thousands of visitors to enjoy authentic crafts and cuisine.

Designed and modeled after a traditional German Christmas market, this village is an authentic step back in time to a classic Yule celebration. Inside, you’ll find international holiday gifts, ornaments, and arts and crafts. For those looking for an authentic experience, treat your taste buds to European food, sweets, baked goods, and, of course, hot drinks.

If you or clients are interested in getting closer to the action and looking for buzzing nightlife opportunities year-round, then Baltimore is a great location to explore. Despite its status as a large city, Baltimore has one of the most affordable median home values in the country at $156,106. There are steals out there waiting to delight your clients, like this 6 bed, 3.5 bath stone shake Victorian home.
