Unlock Great Thanksgiving Possibilities in Key West

While it’s true that most holidays are better spent in Key West, Thanksgiving is particularly delightful. The weather is just starting to hit its sweet spot, the sea calls to the snowbirds, live music pours out of the bars, and the booze flows like an ocean current. After all, Key West was once home to one of the country’s most well-known imbibers, Ernest Hemingway, who spent many a night soaking his thoughts in rum at Sloppy Joe’s. Today, the historic Key West haunt keeps the drinks flowing and even hosts a Hemingway look-alike contest. Hardcore Hemingway historians will point out that the current location isn’t the same one Hemingway frequented, but Key West real estate can be tricky to navigate.

Needless to say, the legendary author frequently enjoyed a cocktail or two in between finishing literary classics like A Farewell to Arms and Death in the Afternoon. The alcohol-fueled enchantment of Key West continues to this day, making it the place to be for what’s possibly the booziest holiday on the books.

Thanksgiving in Key West Offers Something for Everyone

Of course, with the recent pandemic, it’s important to respect local COVID-19 guidelines as well as the CDC’s recommendations for staying safe. For those under age or who choose to walk the straight and narrow — leaving the drinking and hangovers to others — Key West is still just as magical. Beyond its surplus of ocean views, the Great Florida Reef is home to over 1,400 known species of plants and animals, roosters roam the streets, and there’s plenty of recreation like kayaking or stand up paddleboarding to keep you or your guests busy while the bird is in the oven.

Sound pretty nice? You’re not the only one who thinks so. Real estate in Key West is among Florida’s most desirable. According to Zillow, the median home value in Key West hovers around $678,963 and is expected to grow by 6.6% over the next year. That’s up over $100k from just 5 years ago, and more than double Florida’s average median home value of $259,642.

Most of the ocean-front properties, like this $3.1 million breathtaking 3 bed, 3 bath luxury condo or this $3.5 million 5 bed, 6 bath perfectly landscaped Key West escape house, will run well over the seven-figure mark. Those who can live more modestly might enjoy something like this historic 2 bed, 1 bath house for $559k. Like other oceanfront communities, investors seek property to use them as rentals, other well-to-do buyers use them as second homes.

To truly appreciate all that Key West has to offer, however, you’ll need a sea-worthy vessel. Located just 50 miles from the Bahamas, spending the weekend in Nassau is a regular affair. Deep-sea fishing off the coast of the Keys, as Ernest Hemingway might agree, is also some of the best in the world. That means some clients will ask for a private dock, and if the property doesn’t have one, you should keep a list of marinas handy. Oftentimes, boat slips and docks can be rented just like other pieces of real estate.

Better yet, why not bring all the trimmings onto the boat and have a Thanksgiving dinner on the water? With after-dinner drinks timed properly at sunset, we don’t think there’s a better way to celebrate friends and family. Now that’s doing Thanksgiving Key West style!
