Austin Trail of Lights Is Drive-Thru Holiday Magic

Light Up Your Holidays With a Trip Down the Austin Trail of Lights

If there’s any year to brew up a thermos-worth of fresh hot cocoa and embark on a COVID-conscious quest for lights, it’s this year. Luckily for those who live in or near the great city of Austin, you don’t have to go far. The Austin Trail of Lights, which has been a local tradition for over 50 years, is best described as a drive-through holiday display safari, and it’s the perfect way to get your desired dose of festive cheer.

The attraction is currently set up in Zilker Park, just a short jaunt away from some of Austin’s most desirable real estate, like this magnificent ultra-modern 3 bed, 3 bath penthouse listed for just over $1 million. The event runs from 7-10 PM (excepting a few dates) until January 3rd, but many slots are sold out. Those looking to immerse themselves in merriment should act by purchasing tickets in advance.

However, word on the street is that booking tickets in advance is well worth it. The Austin Trail of Lights, which features over two million lights and 65 displays — 12 of which are guitars to celebrate Austin’s indelible musical heritage — might just be the premier holiday to-do in Texas.

In previous years, the event has garnered national recognition as one of the top 20 public lights displays in the country by USA Today and was the only Lone Star location mentioned in Country Living’s38 Best Christmas Light Displays Across the Country That Are Absolutely Breathtaking”.

Of course, this year’s event is a little different. This year will have to do without live entertainment. Amusement rides such as the Ferris wheel and the carousel are not in action. Open-air vehicles (e.g., motorcycles, bicycles, convertibles with the top retracted, scooters, golf carts, etc.) are also prohibited. And as much as we love riding in the back of the pickup, that’s out of the question too.

Regardless, the event supports great local causes via the STARS program, as well as the Texas Central Foodbank, making the trip well worth it. So grab a hot cup, and enjoy yet another lit ATX tradition! After all, it’s events like these that make Austin one of the country’s most desirable places to purchase real estate.
