Meet Florida Real Estate Pro Denise Madan
This month is Women’s History Month, so to get a unique perspective, we decided to reach out to Denise Madan. She’s an experienced, Florida-based real estate professional who’s sold homes for everyone from NBA star Dwyane Wade to everyday folks, regardless of their abilities on the basketball court. Here’s her perspective on what it’s actually like to be a real estate agent in Florida.
An Interview With Denise
Why Choose Real Estate?
“I was rocking and rolling along in my public relations firm. I got married late in life. I had a child.. And my husband and I bought a house - sold it rather quickly. [We] bought another house and at some point, we’re going to move again, so I decided to get my license just so we could take the commission. But in those seven days of going to real estate school, I fell in love with real estate.”
What Challenges Do Women in Real Estate Face?
“When you’re the new kid on the block and you go into an office, a lot of people are a little jealous or envious. It’s like, ‘oh, here’s another real estate agent coming in, they might take some of my listings or my clients.’ So there’s a competitive element, but I have definitely seen it change. Now, on both sides, we work together as a team.”
Are Women Taken Less Seriously in Real Estate?
“No. If you know what you’re doing, you know your business, and you know your job, people take you seriously. But you’ve got to know it, you’ve got to study it, and you have to be confident.”
Why Is It Important that Women Continue to Get Into Real Estate?
“Why not!? It’s a wonderful profession. It’s diverse, it’s challenging, it is never ever, ever boring. Sure, some things are repetitive, like any job, but it’s always a new day. You meet great people and see some incredible homes and some not-so-incredible ones — but it makes for incredible stories. [Real estate is] also great for women who have families.”
Of course, these bite-sized pieces of wisdom are just the tip of the iceberg. In the meantime, check out our YouTube channel to hear more from local experts.
Women and Real Estate Overview
In the United States, ~67.0% of all residential real estate agents are women. However, it wasn’t always that way. According to our video, “The History of Women in Real Estate”, women have played an essential role in the industry as early as 1794, but it wasn’t until the early 1950s that women began to equalize the field.
Even in today’s larger, more-inclusive industry, there’s a lot of work left to be done. Women only make up 36.7% of the commercial real estate industry — a figure that’s remained stagnant for the past 15+ years.
Additionally, the CREW 2020 Benchmark Study Report notes that women in commercial real estate earn approximately10.2% less than their male counterparts, and the commission and bonus gap remains at a bewildering 55.9%. Still, progress is being made. Greater numbers of younger women are entering both residential and commercial than ever before, and people like Denise keep inspiring us year after year to become the best real estate agent around.
