Crabcakes and Football — That’s What Maryland Does Best!

Chances are that if you’re a real estate professional in Maryland then you’ve come across some die-hard football fans, or if you haven’t yet you are definitely bound to. You might even come across parents looking to move simply to switch school districts for their sports programs. That’s because Maryland is home to some of the best athletes and high school sports programs in the nation. So it comes as no surprise that the “Old Line State” also happens to be home to some of the NFL’s top talents.

1. Stefon Diggs, WR Buffalo Bills

Buffalo Bills wide receiver, Stefon Diggs is from Gaithersburg, Maryland, and attended Our Lady of Good Counsel in Olney. However, his Maryland career doesn’t stop there. After being rated the #2 prospect in the nation, he chose to play for the University of Maryland until entering the 2015 NFL draft.

2. Cameron Wake, LB Free Agent (formerly with the Miami Dolphins)

While Cameron Wake is likely nearing the end of his career, his time in the NFL has not gone unnoticed. During his time with the Miami Dolphins - spanning from 2009 to 2019 - his 98 sacks are the second most in Dolphins history. Of course, this four-time all pro linebacker hails from none other than Beltsville, Maryland and attended DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville.

3. Tavon Austin, WR San Francisco 49ers

Tavon Austin, currently with the San Francisco 49ers, has some serious Maryland sports acclaim. Born in Baltimore, he attended Paul Laurence Dunbar High School (also in Baltimore) where he set records for both total offensive yards (9,258) and touchdowns (123). He also won Maryland Consensus Offensive Player of the Year twice.

4. Joe Haden, CB Pittsburgh Steelers

Cornerback Joe Haden is a three-time pro-bowler with an impressive football resume that includes accomplishments like Sporting News’ ‘Defensive Player of the Year’. He also happens to be from Maryland, Fort Washington to be exact, where he started his career at

5. Rodney McLeod, S Philadelphia Eagles

While we imagine the Philadelphia Eagles safety is proud to show off his Super Bowl ring (when he was the 4th highest paid safety in the league), he should also be proud of his Maryland roots. Born in Clinton, Maryland, McLeod attended DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville to boot. Today, McLeod is actively working on “being an agent of change” by sharing his experiences and perspectives from growing up in Clinton.

Whether you’re catering to parents looking to live close to a football powerhouse high school like DeMatha or Friendly High, an assistant coach who needs a place close to the University of Maryland or the Ravens’ stomping grounds, or just have a passion for football, Maryland is the place to be. Who knows? You might even sell property to the next hall of famer. Better yet, maybe he’ll call you when he goes pro?
