Washington State Requirement Details for Real Estate Continuing Education

The CE Shop is an approved school in Washington: Code/Approval Number: S1633

Every two (2) years, 30 clock hours of Real Estate Continuing Education is required.

  • Renewal dates coincide with the licensee birth date.
    • Under the new RCW 18.85, the license expiration dates of first time issued licenses will no longer relate to birth dates.  All first time brokers, managing brokers, and firm licenses issued by the Department of Licensing after July 1, 2010 will expire two years from the date they are issued.
  • Three (3) of the 30 hours are required to be in mandatory/core courses each renewal cycle. In addition, three (3) of the 30 hours are required in a Transition course for all licensees renewing their license after July 1, 2010. Licensees will not have to take the three (3) hour Transition course again after they have taken it for their first renewal cycle after July 1, 2010. Please see our catalog above for these courses.
  • The Washington DOL requires that all students participating in distance (online) learning spend a minimum amount of seat time engaged in the course content.  Our online course delivery system manages this requirement for our students.
  • After July 1, 2010, a salesperson's license is continued in effect but is recognized by the department as a broker's license; and associate broker's, branch manager's, and designated broker's licenses are continued in effect but are recognized by the department as managing broker's licenses. All licensees are required to take a transition course by the licensee's first renewal date after July 1, 2010. The department shall approve the transition course for continuing education credit. All licenses retain their renewal dates established prior to July 1, 2010. New licenses may be issued after completion of the transition course and at the time of the licensee's first renewal date after July 1, 2010. Please see our catalog above for this Transition course. You will not be required to take the Transition course twice. The Department will give CE credit for the Transition Course if a licensee completes the course in 2010 for a renewal that is prior to July 2010. Also, a licensee with a renewal date prior to July 1, 2010, may take the Transition Course prior to July 2010 and carry the hours over for their 2012 renewal if not used in 2010.
  • Current Brokers or future Managing Brokers will have the 30 total hours of continuing education including the 3 hour Core and the 3 hour Transition Course as the only education they will need to renew their licenses after July 1, 2010.
  • Real Estate licensees who received their first license before July 1, 2010 will qualify for their first active renewal by providing proof of completing both the 30 hour Real Estate Practices course and 30 hours of CE which must include a current core course AND the Transition course for a total of 60 hours. The Real Estate Practices course is not offered by The CE Shop at this time.
  • For licensees that get their Broker (formerly Salesperson) July 1, 2010 and after, they will be subject to the new post-licensing educational regimen for their first active renewal which is a total of 90 hours.  30 hours of “Advanced Real Estate Practices”, 30 hours of “Real Estate Law”, 3 hours of “Current Issues in Washington” Core curriculum, the 3 hour “Transition Course” and a minimum of 24 additional hours of continuing education elective courses.

Immediately upon real estate course completion, The CE Shop will provide students with an electronic copy of the course Certificate of Completion. Certificates will remain in your account for a minimum of five (5) years, should you need additional copies at a later time.  Licensees are encouraged to retain copies of their Certificates of Completion in the event that they are audited by the state.  Please refer to your renewal application to determine if you need to submit your Certificate(s) of Completion with your renewal.

Please enter your individual license number correctly and fully when prompted in the registration process to ensure the reporting of your hours takes place. Washington license numbers should be seven (7) digits and usually start with zeros.
