California State Requirement Detail for Real Estate Continuing Education

Every four (4) years, forty-five (45) clock hours of Real Estate Continuing Education is required.

Salespersons and Brokers - Second & Subsequent Renewals

For second and subsequent renewals, all real estate brokers and salespersons must complete 45 clock hours of DRE-approved continuing education consisting of:

·         Either 12 hours of continuing education courses in the following subjects: (Ethics, Agency, Trust Fund Handling, and Fair Housing) OR one six-hour (survey) course that covers the four mandatory subjects (Ethics, Agency, Trust Fund Handling, and Fair Housing); AND
·         One three-hour course in Risk Management; AND

·         At least 18 clock hours of consumer protection courses; and the remaining clock hours required to complete the 45 hours of continuing education may be related to either consumer service (ways licensees can work better or make more money) or consumer protection courses.

For second and subsequent renewals effective on or AFTER July 1, 2011, all real estate brokers and salespersons must complete 45 clock hours of DRE-approved continuing education consisting of:

·         One six-hour (survey) course that covers the four mandatory subjects (Ethics, Agency, Trust Fund Handling, and Fair Housing); AND
·         One three-hour course in Risk Management; AND

·         At least 18 clock hours of consumer protection courses; and the remaining clock hours required to complete the 45 hours of continuing education may be related to either consumer service (ways licensees can work better or make more money) or consumer protection courses.

California mandates that students may not complete more than 8 hours of study time a day, and 15 hours of final exams in a 24 hour period. It is the licensee's responsibility to ensure they do not complete more than 8 hours of coursework or 15 hours of final exams in a day. Courses will be tracked with a seat time, which must be met in order to complete the course.

Salespersons and Brokers - First Time Renewals

*If you are a BROKER and this is your first time renewing your license since you were initially licensed then you are required to complete 45 clock hours of DRE-approved continuing education per the guidelines below:

  • Five separate three-hour courses in each of the following subjects: Ethics, Agency, Fair Housing, Trust Fund Handling, and Risk Management; AND
  • A minimum of 18 clock hours of consumer protection courses; AND
  • The remaining clock hours required to complete the 45 hours of continuing education may be related to either consumer service or consumer protection courses.

*If you are a SALESPERSON who qualified by passing the examination and submitted a license application prior to October 1, 2007, and this is your first time renewing your license since you were initially licensed then you are required to complete 15 clock hours of DRE-approved continuing edcuation which must include the following:

  • A three hour course in Ethics, a three hour course in Agency, a three hour course in Fair Housing, a three hour course in Trust Fund Handling, and a three hour course in Risk Management.

*If you are a SALESPERSON who qualified by passing the examination and submitted a license application on or after October 1, 2007, and this is your first time renewing your license since you were initially licensed then you are required to complete 15 clock hours of DRE-approved continuing edcuation which must include the following: 

  • Five separate three-hour courses in each of the following subjects: Ethics, Agency, Fair Housing, Trust Fund Handling, and Risk Management; AND
  • A minimum of 18 clock hours of consumer protection courses; AND
  • The remaining clock hours required to complete the 45 hours of continuing education may be related to either consumer service or consumer protection courses.

Immediately upon real estate course completion, The CE Shop will provide students with an electronic copy of the course Certificate of Completion. Certificates will remain in your account for a minimum of five (5) years, should you need additional copies at a later time.  Licensees are encouraged to retain copies of their Certificates of Completion in the event that they are audited by the state.  Please refer to your renewal application to determine if you need to submit your Certificate(s) of Completion with your renewal.
